Add Charm to the Back of a House

Three years ago we had a storm that came through our neighborhood and our trampoline blew into our house and damaged the aluminum siding, broke a window and ripped some screens. You could see how we rescreened the damaged screens here. Instead of replacing all the siding we choose to add an overhang, lights and shutters. We had the work done last fall and I am finally posting about it. I really like the new look and the benefit of having the overhang to block some rain. By having the break in the siding with the overhang we were able to replace sections of the siding and not have to replace all of it.

Railing or No Railing?

How was your 4th of July? Ours was very nice, but HOT!!!
This is our house, and we have been contemplating the idea of taking out the railing. I like how it looks, but there are several reasons on why we would want to take it out.

Kitchen Cabinet Organization

An organized kitchen is very important in having an efficient kitchen. I am very fortunate to have a lot of cabinets. It makes it easier to keep neat and organized with more space. Having 12 children we need more of everything, cups, plates, etc. Even with all these cabinets I do keep some things that are only used occasionally in the basement.
This is one angle of my kitchen….

Basement Recliner Couches

A couple of weeks ago I posted about our family room and kitchen update and how we rearrange our furniture. I thought I would show you how we put the sectional couches from our family room into the basement. They are really comfortable and there are FOUR recliners. I really like recliners! This room looks like it is finished, but it is really not. The walls are cement with a stucco (I think? It came with the house. We were fortunate that it was partially finished.) on it and painted. There is no insulation and no electric on these walls and the carpet is just laid in down. Adding walls, electric and floors will be another project someday.

Main Floor Renovation Part 4:Family Room and Kitchen Updates

Well it has been almost a year since we renovated our main floor. You could see that project here and here. I had been wanting to show the rooms totally done but they never got there. There is still trim work that needs to be finished and we were hoping to sell a house that we have staged with a good amount of furniture, and decorations, before I showed you the rooms, but just recently we had our third contract fall through do to financing. Please pray that we could find a buyer for our beautiful investment house.
This picture is from just after the floor was completed in March of 2011. The cabinet on the left has our old TV in it. IMG_2320

Bathroom Organization

Storage is always and issue for our family in every room. Keeping things simplified is one of the things we try to do. The more things you have, the more things you have to store. We have garage sales twice a year, one in the spring and one in the fall. I find that having a garage sale encourages us to go through everything the best we could. It is important to keep things neat and clean, even in the bathroom.

Here is our master bathroom. I like to keep it as neat as possible with nothing on the counters. I chose brown for the walls because I like the contrast against the white, and we get plenty of light in there.
I must have different watt bulbs in the light fixture. lol (I didn’t notice this before.)
You could see how we framed the mirror here.

How we Organize and use our Garage

About five years ago  we move to our current house, and being parents of a dozen, being on an acre lot was a must.  We used to live on a quarter of an acre lot and we really wanted the kids to have more room to run around and play. Another amenity to this house is that it has a three car garage with a ample storage cabinets. These are some of the awesome cabinets that came in the garage.

Great Finds

I really like to go to garage sales, but I just haven’t had the time to go much the last few years. Just about all of my furniture and decorations are second hand.  I really have a hard time spending a lot of money on things that will get killed gently worn by  so many children. I like changing things out occasionally and I don’t mind doing so if I didn't spend a lot of money, and if I am able to find something to replace worn items or if I am just tired of it.
My next door neighbor was having a garage sale last week so I was able to check out what she had. I found a couple of great finds for my den/library. I bought this lamp which is an antique for only $5.00, and these globes which I believe may also be an antique, all 3 for $8.00. (what a deal). I am not sure if this is where I will keep them, but this is where they are for now.

The Main Floor Renovation Part 3:The Hardwood Floors are Started

So we finally got our wood. We ordered it in November and just received it last Friday. The place we ordered it from was having trouble getting it from their supplier. It is not even the color we ordered. We hope we like it as much as the original color. We had to wait 72 hours for the wood to acclimate before we could start so we were able to work on it 3 days this week, and we have about half of it done.
Here is a picture of what we have done so far.IMG_9198

How we Keep our Bathroom Organized.

With several children, it is very important to stay organized. One thing that we did in our hall bathroom, was to add a row of hooks.  That way each person has their own hook, for their own towel.  It makes it way easier to keep the bathroom neat.
