Blue Bathroom Makeover

The house I grew up in had two and a half baths all of which where what we called The Pink Bathroom, The Yellow Bathroom and The Blue Bathroom.  We helped renovate my parent’s house while hubby was out of work, and we were able to do just about all of it. Today we are gong to show you how we transformed The Blue Bathroom into this with a very limited budget.

While my husband was out of work for a couple of years we flipped three homes and worked on some side jobs. One of the jobs we did was to renovate and update my parent’s house. Their deck was weathered and not looking too good.  Look at the before.

My Parent’s Pink Bathroom Renovation

Have you ever seen a “Pink Bathroom”? That is what our family called our hall bathroom. You will see why we called it that below.

I also came from a family with 12 children. I never thought I would have the same. My husband and I did want a large family, and we were willing to accept whatever God would bless us with. We are very blessed to have twelve beautiful children and couldn’t imagine it any other way.

My parents had a house built, and moved in to it, in 1964. We had 3 bathrooms; one we called the yellow bathroom, one we called the pink bathroom and one we called the blue bathroom. (Could you imagine actually picking out these colors for the fixtures? My Mom did!) Well, they have been these colors for all those years. Until, last year while my husband was out of work, we did some updating,  remodeling, and renovations, at my parents house.  You could see the kitchen here, the family room here (the removing of paneling), how we removed wall paper here, and the bedroom here. Eventually, I will show you all the rooms we have done. My Mom is sooo happy with all the changes.

My dad was not very handy and to him, as long as something worked there was no reason to replace it. One of the reasons they agreed to have some things done to their house was the fact that it has been getting hard for my Mom to get around, and they were thinking if they had to move to a ranch there were definitely things that needed to be done to their house, to be able to sell it. 

This bathroom was one of the rooms we felt was very important to renovate for them.

My Parent’s Kitchen Renovation

During the summer we took some time to renovate my parent’s (Who also had 12 children) house, and one of the rooms that needed some updating was the kitchen. They had replaced the cabinets, about 20 years ago, which we did not change. Some of the changes we did was to remove the wallpaper, replace the tile that was there for 46 years, replace the hardware, took down the paneling, replaced the sink and faucet and painted the trim and walls. Our goal was to try and update the house so they could hopefully sell (my Mom is having a harder time getting around) and move out by us into a ranch.

How to Patch Cracks

This is one of the cracks we found under the paneling we removed at my Parent’s house. You could read about that here. This is above the doorway in their foyer.

The first thing to do to repair a crack like this is to scrape off any rough spots.

How to Remove Wallpaper

When we redid my Parents house we had several rooms that had wallpaper. We removed wall paper in the past and it is not fun. We have also used several products in the past to help the removal process. What we used the last several times was the Basic H Degreaser formula. Which is 1 tablespoon of the Basic H in 16 oz. of water. It worked great and no harmful chemicals. These are the before pictures of the rooms that had wallpaper. We will be posting about the complete redoes in the future.

We always called this the pink bathroom. Note the pink toilet and sink. The tub was pink also.

My Parent’s Bedroom Makeover

I am the 5th of twelve children myself.  My mother is having a hard time getting around for the past year. Her leg has been hurting and they live in a raised ranch and the stairs are getting hard on her. My parents would like to move soon to a ranch and their house needed some major updating. You see the only updating they did to their house was to add wall paper, paneling and kitchen cabinets twenty years ago or more.
During the summer while the children were off school and we had some extra time. We decided to help my parents out and renovate their house. We wanted to do this so when they need to put their house up for sale they will be get a better offer. We would really like them to move out by us.
We will be showing some of the things we did and how we did them. Most of them are great projects for a do it yourselfer.
This is my parents bedroom before we removed the wall paper and painted. I actually put the wall paper up for her, probably 25 years ago. (I never thought I would be the one taking it down) Unfortunately,  I did not take pictures of the during,  We used non-toxic Shaklee Basic H to remove the wall paper. I will be posting about how to do that soon. (I took pictures of another room.)
