Before

Here are my parents in their Living Room before we renovated it. Below there are lots of pictures of the different stages of the renovation.

We added new tile and trim to the foyer.

Here we were preparing to remove the paneling by taking down the trim at the ceiling, corners, and baseboards.

The first pieces were down, lots of liquid nails.

Lots more to come down!

Here it’s all down, now comes the wall repairs.

Look what we found. This was the date most of the paneling was put up. You could also see how some glue was left, that needed to be scraped and sanded. In other spots, part of the drywall was removed and needed to be patched.

This was the date that the foyer paneling was put up.

My Mom was so happy she wrote this on the wall. How cute! (My Dad was not a handy man at all.)

The wall repair was started. I had my son do the high spots, I am not good with heights.
DSCI1067
We used joint compound to patch the walls and then had to sand everything. What a mess!

We then primed the walls. Some of the lines on the walls were bleeding through, so we had to buy a shellac primer, extremely smelly, and I am assuming toxic. Good thing it was during the summer and we were able to keep the windows open, while we were painting.

There were a few settling cracks in the wall, like this one, to the left of the door, that I show you how to patch here.

Here are our girls helping. We had to paint the ceiling also, what a pain. I do not like doing ceilings.

Here we are painting the new trim for around the doors and baseboards.

Here are the little ones playing outside while we were working.

Try and keep the paint on the walls, please?

Here are some pictures after the painting, before the finishing touches were done.

What a job, but what and improvement.

In the lower level there was paneling also, but we decided to prime and paint those walls. Follow us, so you could see the post about that soon.
We used a Benjamin Moore color called Shaker Beige.
Have you ever taken down paneling before?

  8. It is amazing how much bigger everything looks! We repainted my Grandma's basement a few years back, she has paneling, so we just painted over it...it really brightened things up!
