Growing Green Onions: A Fun Project for the Kids

This is a fun project for the children to try. All of mine had fun watching the onions growing every day. So did I! lol!
This is what we did:
Cut the tops off the green onions and put rubber bands around the base of the onions and placed them into a bowl or a glass cup.
This is a picture after the first day for most of them and after a week for the onions on the right. (We wanted to try more.)

Day three or four.

We lost count of the days and forgot to take pictures every day.

You could see growth every day.

At some point we transferred them into a larger bowl.

This is after several days I can’t remember how long we let them grow. I think it was between one and two weeks. We then cut the greens off and used them to top our tacos.

What do you think about this?
Have you ever tried this before?
Let me know if you do try it and what you thought?
Please leave comments below. I love to hear from all of you.

  1. Very neat! I'm going to try! What do the rubber bands do? Is that necessary?

    1. I think is just to hold the onions together. I don't think you need the rubber band. I would have put the onions in a glass cup next time and then you may not need the rubber band.
