How to Refinish Basement Stairs

Hi, how are you doing? I have been out of the computer world for the past couple of weeks. I have had a lot going on. One of the things I have been working on is our basement stairs.
How to Paint Basement Stairs
We had carpet on them that did not match the carpet in the basement and it was really bad. So when my husband took the carpet off this is what it looked like. We did not want to replace the carpet at this time so painting them was a quick, free fix, because I already had the paint.

1. This is the view from the top. You could see all the screws holes. we filled these with joint compound and the cracks along the side we filled with caulk to give them a clean finished look.

The step was glued on to the riser with liquid nails. You could see the glue below. I did not want to have to deal with trying to remove it because the wood used is not very nice and that would be a real pain. You could see how I refinished our stair on the main floor here. Those were worth going through all the work to strip and finish. I think they turned out great.

2. The next step is to paint the risers. I think it looks way nicer having a two tone look, even if they are not the best looking. I just painted over all the liquid nails. It is not great but I don’t notice it unless I am looking for it.

3. Paint the steps, also known as the tread. I did half at a time so I could go back up the stairs.

  2. Do you have any issues with the paint chipping? Did you have to use primer first? Looks great!!!!

    1. I primed the white part, because the wood would keep on soaking up the paint, it also gives it a smoother finished look. The brown color was a Behr solid color porch and patio floor paint, from Home Depot. It recommends a primer or to go over previously painted surfaces. I did not prime, but I think there was enough over spray from the builder paint for it to work well. I really like all of the Behr products.

  3. I like it. I want to do this on our main floor stairs but my hubs has been hesitant. I'll be showing him this post. I can also do this on the basement stairs. Great job.
